McCain Foods & Western Tractor Are Raising Funds for HALO Air Ambulance while supporting local Potato Growers with Potato Surplus
Announcing a Fry Day Event Offering Free French Fries for All
Lethbridge, AB, May 20, 2020 – McCain Foods, Western Tractor and J.E.B. Transport have teamed up to host a Free Fry Day community event to raise funds for HALO Air Ambulance while simultaneously supporting Canadian potato farmers. On Friday, May 29, nearly 7,500 bags of french fries, supplied by McCain Foods, will be given away at Western Tractor dealerships located in Medicine Hat, Burdett, Taber and Lethbridge.
“As a business operating in Southern Alberta, we are invested in the success of the communities we serve. With Alberta potato farmers impacted by the shutdown of the foodservice sector as a result of the COVID- 19 pandemic and the recent news about HALO Air Ambulance, we wanted to do our part in ensuring those in our communities have the support and access to essential services they need," said Steven Dyck, President, Western Tractor. "Thanks to the generous support from McCain Foods and J.E.B. Transport, we’re excited to host this trifecta event and welcome the chance to support three things that are important to us – our communities, HALO Air Ambulance, and Alberta potato growers. Our goal is to raise
$100,000 and we’re challenging businesses, organizations big and small, and individuals to join in the effort. In this way, part of the potato stock will be used and hopefully word will spread to eat more fries while supporting a great cause. Lives and livelihoods are at stake. As a community, we can help.” said Dyck.
French Fries Feed Farmers
It’s a difficult time for many Canadians as the pandemic strains our nation. But with restaurants closed, or operating in a reduced capacity, it’s become especially tough for Canada’s potato growers. “There’s a surplus of french fry potatoes in Canada. It’s important that we come together to help the farmers who’ve given us so much. McCain has been part of the Coaldale community for 20 years and we’re pleased to be working collaboratively with an industry leader like Western Tractor on this important initiative for Southern Albertans to rally behind,” said Andrew Jay, Plant Manager, McCain Foods. “We will be there for our communities throughout this crisis because we are all in this together and committing to eating more fries is a small act that can have a big impact on Canadian farm families,” said Jay.
HALO Air Ambulance is the only medevac helicopter dedicated to serving southern Alberta and within two weeks HALO Air Ambulance will scale back its operations and may be forced to cease operating completely by July 1. “HALO provides an essential service in the region and if our service were to stop this would have an immediate and significant impact on the communities we serve. We are so grateful to Western Tractor, McCain Foods and J.E.B Transport for their support during this unsettled and difficult time,” said Paul Carolan, CEO, HALO Air Ambulance.
To participate in the Free Fry Day giveaway, guests can stop by their local Western Tractor dealership during the designated distribution time for their community. Each vehicle will receive two 6.5 lbs. bags of frozen french fries through curbside contactless pickup. Anyone who wants to help support HALO can make a donation through their website. Full event details and distribution times can be found on the event page.
